Intramural Leagues: How do they Shape AU?

Intermural leagues are comprised of recreational sports that focus more on fun. What makes these leagues unique is the fact that they aren’t rooted too much in competition, with the focus being on the fun that you will have in playing the sport. 

Eagles Top Bucknell for First Win Since 2013

American University soccer secured a milestone victory over Bucknell on Saturday, earning its first win over the Bison since 2013. The Eagles had tied Bucknell in 2019 but had fallen in each of the other 10 meetings since then. Senior Klingensmith capped her career with a team-high four goals this season and tied graduate student Jennifer McGuire for the team lead in points at 10. Junior Bella Miller scored the game’s opening goal, her first of the season, less than a minute after coming off the bench in the 27th minute. Assists on the goal came from freshman Mary DelVecchio, marking the first point of her career, and McGuire, who tied for the team lead with four assists this season.

The tension in Bender Arena was palpable on November 17 as American University’s women’s basketball team faced off against the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens. From tip-off to the final buzzer, the game was a rollercoaster, and as a cheerleader on the sidelines, I felt every high, every near-miss, and every surge of energy from both teams and their fans.

New AU Community Partnership Brings Famous Athletes to Campus

  Famous professional athletes Josh Norman and Oguchi Onyewu were taking free kicks on the quad Friday, Sept. 29.  The world-class athletes came as representatives for the organization Football for Peace, an international non-governmental organization that uses sports for diplomacy and outreach. The organization aims to reduce poverty, inequality, environmental degradation and injustice via sports diplomacy. 

Spotlight: How Women’s Soccer Head Coach Marsha Harper Breaks Down Barriers on and off the Field

The American University Women’s Soccer team is in the midst of a resurgence, and it is thanks in large part to the culture change brought about by head coach Marsha Harper. Harper is in her third year as head coach of the Lady Eagles soccer team, and the team’s improvement is more evident with each passing year. The proof is in the pudding, as the team went from winless in her first year as head coach to three wins and eighth in their conference this past season.

Catfishing, Mental Health, and Homophobia in Football Culture

Former Notre Dame and National Football League linebacker Manti Te’o is a victim of one of the most infamous catfishing scandals to date. This scandal is so well known,  Netflix created a documentary, “Untold: The Girlfriend That Doesn’t Exist”. The documentary gives an amazing backstory on his life leading up to the scandal and the fallout it precipitated.

The Ins and Outs of Being A Black Male Basketball Athlete at AU

As American University’s Black community has grown there has been a large influx of Black men on the campus which has increased traction and motive to create insular and positive organizations and environments for Black men and athletes on campus to congregate and join in brotherhood. The strong sense of Blackness and commradie from freshmen Elijah Stephens [elijahstephens_], graduate students Marvin Bragg Jr. [messymarvv], and Stacky Beckton Jr. [4ep_beck] displays the pride, self-awareness, and rich experiences towards highlighting the embodiment of a Black man’s experience in America and at a PWI, such as American University. 

Soccer: The U.S is Catching Up with the Rest of the World

Soccer, or commonly known to the rest of the world as “football”, was voted the #1 most popular sport in the world as of March 2022 by sports browser. With an estimated 3.5 billion fans, which is half the global population, it’s safe to say that the sport has earned its title. While it’s seen mass popularity in most parts of the world, soccer is just beginning to gain prominent notoriety in the U.S.
