Hello Hello! This is the first installment of a new series I will be writing for BP called the “Weekly Round-Up.” Each week, I will be discussing my favorite releases across a variety of musical genres. Though these songs will be of different genres, what connects them all is the color of the artist’s skin (blackity black y’all!). With this series, I hope to expose Black and non-Black students to the music of Black musicians across many genres. Not only is this an opportunity for me to discover Black music, but for you to engage with music they may otherwise have. I hope you can join me on this journey through Black music! For week one, I will be reviewing my favorite releases since the beginning of the academic year. No specific genre is attached to these songs, however, most of them are R&B or incorporate R&B aesthetics.

As long as filmmaking has been in practice, Black pain and trauma have always been persistent themes, and this influence heavily colors the angst that permeates the Black community. In some films, the pain is a focal point through which lived experiences can be brought to the public to shed light on the Black American experience while other portrayals of Black trauma are purely exploitive.

If you haven’t heard or listened to KAYTRANADA, you must be living under a rock. From the viral KAYTRANADA TikTok trends to the geniusly infused collaborations that are produced; his style, flow, and rhythm are more than just a blessing to the ears, it's an experience. Whether you stream his music on Spotify or Apple Music (*cough cough sniff, Spotify is better) or lucky enough to snatch a ticket and see him in person, KAYTRANADA’s versatile skill of incorporating modern R&B beats and vibes mélanged with house music, is what makes his music so idiosyncratic.

I am a young Black woman who was born and raised here in the United States. From an early age, I always paid close attention in my history classes and took good notes, and it’s because of this that I know the following truth: Attacks against our democracy are far from new.

As the rap game oscillates between lyrical professionalism and Tik-Tok meme-ability, a balance must be met for the rap game to continue on a steady path upward. Unfortunately, many young rap artists are leaning more towards Tik-Tok meme-ability, creating music that hovers above adolescent insecurities and just below outright stupidity. Let me be clear: RAP IS NOT TIK TOK. Rap is an extension of the Black community that, though it should be shared by all, does not belong to all. When rappers feed into the money-making machine that is Tik-Tok, they voluntarily give ownership to a community that fails to understand the diasporic energies that permeate the genre. It is then refreshing when a young artist like Baby Keem takes initiative and attempts to blend the new generation of rap with rap originalism. The Melodic Blue, the debut studio album from the California-born artist invents a space where witty lyricism, over-accentuated autotune, and Tik-Tok-made 808s can exist together. With no shortage of radio-made hits, neo-R&B arrangements, trap beats, and Pan-African beats, The Melodic Blue is a medley of experimentation the rap game so desperately needed. With so many young rap artists sounding the same, I find relief in listening to something, anything, that’s a little different.

If you’re an avid Twitter user, like myself, then your timeline may have been flooded with content about Nicki Minaj and her opinions about the COVID-19 vaccine ––what some people are calling #BallGate–– for the past few weeks. While the incident is quite ridiculous from start to finish, the power and influence that celebrities have should be taken seriously, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

September 22, 2021: American University’s Student Union Board welcomed R&B artist, Lucky Daye, to a virtual concert on Wednesday in collaboration with The BlackPrint and Black Student Union. Lucky Daye, born David Debrandon Brown, is a New Orleans native, who brings soul and jazz to the R&B genre in a way we haven’t seen. Daye’s passion for music began at a young age, as he grew up heavily involved in church. Daye has always had a gifted voice and in his participation in choir and the church, his family tended to frown upon secular music. His musical talents were confined to church hymns and nursery rhymes during his early years. Lucky’s love for R&B and jazz music was a secret passion the world didn’t know about, but one that was definitely needed.
