American University soccer secured a milestone victory over Bucknell on Saturday, earning its first win over the Bison since 2013. The Eagles had tied Bucknell in 2019 but had fallen in each of the other 10 meetings since then. Senior Klingensmith capped her career with a team-high four goals this season and tied graduate student Jennifer McGuire for the team lead in points at 10. Junior Bella Miller scored the game’s opening goal, her first of the season, less than a minute after coming off the bench in the 27th minute. Assists on the goal came from freshman Mary DelVecchio, marking the first point of her career, and McGuire, who tied for the team lead with four assists this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Roemer delivered a standout performance, making nine saves, including several dramatic stops in the second half. With an average of six saves per game this season, Roemer led all Patriot League players in saves. Despite a 26-8 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal for Bucknell, the Eagles capitalized on key opportunities. The Bison also outpaced AU 10-1 in corner kick chances.
crossing to Miller. The junior sprinted onto the ball and headed it off the underside of the crossbar, giving AU a 1-0 lead. Bucknell equalized three minutes later with a Louisa Thomsen header that slipped past Roemer, whose vision had been blocked by action in front of the net. McGuire nearly restored the lead in the 37th minute with a long cross, but Bison goalkeeper Reese Dolan made the save. Roemer’s most impressive stop came with just over two minutes left in the first half, denying Henna Andican in a 1v1 situation.
In the second half, Roemer continued her heroics, stopping five shots on goal, including two diving saves, and defending six Bucknell corner kicks. AU’s second shot on goal of the half proved decisive. Sophomore Maddie Hurowitz was fouled in the goal box with just over a minute to play, setting up Klingensmith to calmly convert the penalty kick to the lower left corner and secure a 2-1 victory. The win marked a memorable conclusion to Klingensmith’s career and a statement performance for a resilient AU squad.
