The Campus Concert of the Year: How Tinashe’s Innovative Style Touched the Hearts of the AU Community

The Blackprint’s Ryann Rodney reviewed the campus’s event of the year and asked the industry mogul a question about her inspirations.

American University’s campus was buzzing last night as students poured into the venue for one of the most anticipated events of the semester. From homegrown performers to a chart-topping headliner, the evening delivered the kind of spark that reminds everyone why AU’s arts community stands out.

The show opened with two groups straight out of College Park: 242 and Daydreamerz. Both acts brought an energy that felt bigger than the room could contain. 242 introduced a blend of neo-soul and rock that was electric, and immediately engaging. Daydreamerz followed with a confident hip-hop set that drew loud cheers and set the pace for the night.

Next came AU In Motion, one of the university’s most beloved performance groups. They delivered a routine full of precision, stage presence, and crowd-pleasing choreography. Students responded with the usual enthusiasm and admiration that the group has earned over the years.

The night reached its peak when Tinashe arrived on stage. Her performance was a full-scale visual and musical experience. She moved with a fluid, effortless style that felt modern and refined. The stage design added even more depth, using deep blue lighting that occasionally took on a trippy feel, paired with slight metallic accents. Smooth camera pans highlighted both Tinashe and her dancers, creating visuals that felt immersive.

Her dancers amplified her presence and helped bring each song to life. From start to finish, Tinashe’s vocals were seemed effortlessly melodic as she delivered complex choreography with complete control.

During the evening, I had the chance to ask her which Black artist inspires her the most. She chose Janet Jackson without hesitation. The influence was easy to recognize in her rhythmic precision, her stage presence, and the tight cohesion of her performance.

She moved through a setlist packed with fan favorites, including “Link Up,” “Bouncin,” “2 On,” “Gravity,” and “Nasty.” Each song landed with full force and kept the crowd energized until the very end.

By the time the concert wrapped up, students were still buzzing with excitement. From rising talent and campus favorites to a headliner who delivered a powerful, polished show, the night reminded everyone just how vibrant AU’s creative scene can be.
