Eagles Fall Short in Nail-Biting Showdown Against Delaware

The tension in Bender Arena was palpable on November 17 as American University’s women’s basketball team faced off against the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens. From tip-off to the final buzzer, the game was a rollercoaster, and as a cheerleader on the sidelines, I felt every high, every near-miss, and every surge of energy from both teams and their fans.

The first half was a showcase of grit and determination. AU’s Madisyn Moore-Nicholson led the charge, keeping the Eagles in striking distance with sharp shooting and relentless hustle. By halftime, the score was tied 30-30, and the arena buzzed with anticipation for the second half.

The game’s intensity only grew after the break, with Delaware pushing hard and regaining the lead in the third quarter. What stood out most from my perspective wasn’t just the play on the court, it was the atmosphere in the stands. Delaware’s visiting fan section brought an incredible energy, cheering passionately down to the final seconds. Their enthusiasm seemed to lift their team and made every possession feel electric. Though AU’s fans were fewer in number, the Eagles never lost their spirit, battling for every rebound and fast break.

Watching the team play from the sidelines, you could see the cohesion and determination in every movement. Madisyn Moore-Nicholson, Molly Driscoll, and Charlotte Tuhy carried the team with skill and heart, keeping AU competitive until the final buzzer. Despite a strong effort, the Eagles fell 68-57, but the game left a lasting impression.

Even in defeat, moments like these remind you why college sports are about more than just wins and losses. The camaraderie, the energy, and the sheer dedication of the athletes and fans alike made the night unforgettable. For AU’s women’s basketball team, the journey continues, and if this game was any indication, the Eagles’ tenacity will keep fans on the edge of their seats all season.
