STATEMENT: On The Eagle's Misnaming of Tamir Harper

Earlier this month at the request of The Eagle, The Blackprint entered a collaboration to highlight American University's talented Black artists. We were excited to join forces with another student media organization to further celebrate the creative contributions of Black students.

On Friday, August 28, the 57th Anniversary of the March on Washington and the date on which Emmett Till was lynched, our editor-in-chief Tamir Harper had his name printed incorrectly in The Eagle's newsletter. He was misnamed as Tamir Rice, the unarmed young King who was shot and killed in Cleveland, Ohio in 2014 by a reckless police officer. The Eagle has since issued a correction.

Due to that egregious mistake, The Blackprint team has decided to end the collaboration with The Eagle.  While the collaboration is ending the Blackprint will still highlight Black artists and students as we have been doing since our inception. We will do what we do best — valuing Black LIVES.

While we do that we call on The Eagle to review their editorial process and undergo DEI training. A small correction in an email is not enough.
