The new policy comes in response to a number of student-led protests regarding the conflict in Gaza. The policy was announced in an email where President Sylvia Burwell also openly condemned Anti-Semitism. Members of the American University Students for Justice in Palestine – or AU SJP – felt the email came in direct opposition to their efforts.

Within the hip-hop and rap genres, the amount of attention and fame received from fans toward male and female artists is disproportionate. Could this be the result of a double standard in the industry? To start off this discussion of double standards/misogyny in Hip-Hop/ Rap, let’s start with the rise of the female rapper, Sexxy Red. Many of her performances in places such as high schools, colleges, venues, etc. have been receiving negative backlash revolving around her lyrics being inappropriate (Trent Fitzgerald, 2023) when male rappers do similar performances with an equal amount of profanity but receive little to no backlash. In an NME article, female rapper Megan the Stallion proclaims that there is a “crazy double standard” (Tom Skinner 2022) when people criticize how female and male artists perform live; “A boy could start rapping about popping pills and enjoying four women at one time, and nobody would have a problem with that,” (Skinner). In the same article, Megan explains how “rap being a male-dominated ecosystem” plays a part in the turnout and double standard.

Are you new to the DMV and AU? Are you curious about which thrift stores to go to? You’re in the right place. There are many thrift stores in the DMV, but in this article, I will be reviewing three thrift stores; Planet Aid, the Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center and the Georgetown Flea. Planet Aid and the Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center are close in proximity so as a car-less college student, you will be able to walk from one destination to the other. Taking public transportation also makes it a lot easier to commute to the stores.

From the McDonald’s Cardi B and Offset meals in February to the Pride logo temporarily replacing company logos in June, to even the corny commercials only displaying Mexican culture instead of all Hispanic culture, these marketing strategies are used to monetize off the public. Trinidad Aguirre once said that "it's honestly common in my experience. Major brands try to do these things without really attempting to understand our diverse culture, right, and they often miss the mark time and time again." And, he’s right, I think it’s great to have these months where music, food, clothes, history, and culture can be highlighted, celebrated, and revered but instead, major corporations and companies leverage capitalism as a ploy of celebration.

As American University’s Black community has grown there has been a large influx of Black men on the campus which has increased traction and motive to create insular and positive organizations and environments for Black men and athletes on campus to congregate and join in brotherhood. The strong sense of Blackness and commradie from freshmen Elijah Stephens [elijahstephens_], graduate students Marvin Bragg Jr. [messymarvv], and Stacky Beckton Jr. [4ep_beck] displays the pride, self-awareness, and rich experiences towards highlighting the embodiment of a Black man’s experience in America and at a PWI, such as American University. The conversations that underline the importance of Black men solidarity is an opportunity to deconstruct and break down the immobility that has been dealt to Black men which disable moments for vulnerability, fluidity, and education that pertain to Black men’s health, prioritization, and individuality instead of a commodity. Conversations such as these are even more important for Black men in spaces where Black men are the minority within the minority as an athlete, student, and man. In remembrance of Black History Month and commemoration of Fredrick Douglas’s 127th birthday on February 20th, 2022, the Sports section of The BlackPrint wanted to highlight the voices, thoughts, opinions, and individuality of the Black men on the American University Men’s Basketball team.

If you guessed player #3 Colin Smalls, then you shot the 3-pointer. Colin Smalls [@colsmals] is a sophomore attending American University, majoring in business administration at the Kogod School of Business, and a player on the Men’s Basketball team. The DMV native’s inspiration starts with the time spent at his grandparents ``always having some kind of ball in…hands whether it was a basketball, football, or soccer ball”. Smalls grandfather took the time, ardor, and flexibility to “sit on the couch and toss the ball back and forth” because of the imbued spirit for basketball Smalls carried as a child. His grandfather “eventually found a park nearby and practiced shooting lay-ups to jump shots, shoot with both hands, dribble around, and play one-on-one” that built the stepping stones for Smalls’ humbled spirit and fervor for the game. Along with Smalls aspirations to continue to grow and refine himself, his inner child is one of the primary inspirations that keeps him going today Smalls expresses that “even on the days when…doesn’t want to play” Smalls younger self “is fired to be here, playing division one basketball, doing what…loves at this level”. Smalls’ determination and investment into himself even when he’s “hurting, had a bad day, doesn’t want to go to practice'' refers to his younger self and “what he’d think'' because Small’s primary goal is to “make the next version” of himself proud. The most principal experience which defines Smalls is understanding of the ins and outs of being an athlete at a PWI like American University is through the ability to navigate the intersectionality of being a Black man and an athlete. Luckily for him he feels like “people are accepting of everybody so I don't feel like there’s a difference between that or not fitting into the community… I feel a part of the community.”Smalls strives to immerse himself into campus life and socialize with his basketball teammates and other acquaintances as he “likes to interact with other people, other students on campus, so don’t try to box myself in.”

Ramadan is the holy month of fasting, reflection, and peace for Muslims every year. Ramadan consists of fasting (no eating, drinking, and other regulations) from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days followed by a celebration of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan in celebration of completing the entire month. Through a whole day of fasting, families from different countries and all kinds of different traditions come together at the sound of the Maghrib Athan (sunset call to prayer) to initiate the Maghrib prayer and the break of their fast to eat Iftar (meal at sunset to break fast). Across the globe, millions of Muslims fast, pray daily obligatory prayers and non-obligatory prayers (like Taraweeh), eat Iftar, eat suhoor (meal before dawn to start fasting) together or alone during these humble and important days. A month full of cherished traditions, beautiful food, and close connections with God.

The climate change disaster so many people wished upon Southern states like Texas and Florida after their 2020 electoral vote results has occurred. On February 16, 2021, a historic deep freeze swept Texas, Tennessee, and other Southern states, where at least 58 people had died.

On January 6th, 2021, the world was glued to their TV screens as they watched the mayhem at Capitol Hill. White supremacists and alt-right pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building, believing that they had the power to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election results, and the police did little to prevent the insurrection from occurring. The groundwork for the insurrection dates back to almost a year ago, but the planning for the insurrection happened across the span of several weeks. Tweets dating back to December 23, 2019 serve as evidence that the far-right was rallying to suppress democracy, and the federal government failed to take these sentiments seriously and act on time.

American University announced in an email from President Burwell on Monday, February 22, that it is currently on track to conduct in-person classes and a full residential experience for the Fall 2021 semester, with health and safety practices, such as physical distancing and masks. The return to in-person instruction will also be followed by expanded COVID-19 testing, no reductions to financial aid, and no increases to the 2021-2022 academic year’s tuition and housing costs for undergraduate, graduate, and Washington College of Law students.

Imagine block after block of fast food chains like McDonalds or KFC serving as the only source of food with no grocery stores within a mile radius. Cities across America are dry stricken without fresh food for miles to come, leaving thousands abandoned in food deserts. Food deserts as defined by Medical News Today are “regions where people have limited access to healthful and affordable food.”

For a group of people who pride themselves on being committed to racial, economic, and environmental justice, a different ego has emerged from progressives and liberals alike during the week of the 2020 Presidential Election. Both political ideologies created a campaign of “kindness, justice, and equity” to vote Trump out of the White House, but they failed to deliver the same message in a time where it was needed most: election week. During the week of the election, a social media cleanse was not only needed to avoid false information on voter fraud, but to deter the inhumanity perpetrated by so-called progressives and liberals in battleground states, mostly located in the South and the Midwest.

What would Congress think? If I, as a Black man, were to share my frustrations of what occurred on the floor? If they were to actually hear the pain I felt— what ached while sitting in my DC apartment, staring out of my window as sirens blared throughout the streets; streets that I know were forbidden to those who looked like me, but seemed to be owned by those in red hats and white skin. The feeling of knowing, knowing that I could not dare leave my apartment or my life would be in jeopardy. What would Congress think? What would run through their mind? While I can’t share all my frustrations, because my parents will one day read this, I will offer some here:

In early October, the hashtag #EndSARS began trending on Twitter and other social media platforms. The hashtag brought awareness to the current situation in Nigeria, Africa’s most popular country, and the violence in the police state of the government. The hashtag was first used in 2018, and the current wave of protests began after a young man was murdered in Delta State after a stop-and-search operation on Oct. 3 by SARS officers.
