Six Reasons Why You Should Celebrate Being Bae-less This Valentine's
BY: MARIAH ESPADA
February 14th has arrived and if you are single this year, you may be dreading getting out of bed on Cupid’s day. While you may not have a bae to shower you in chocolate-covered strawberries, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this day too. Whether you are single or in the “it’s complicated” phase, there are many reasons why you should proudly claim your status this Valentines.
1. Your Favorite Celebrities Are Doing It
If Rihanna can do it, so can you. A-list celebs ranging from Taraji P. Henson to newly single Jennifer Lopez are proudly tackling the 14th without baes. Let’s not forget our beloved Nicki Minaj, who recently broke up with rapper ex-fiancé, Meek Mill. Hollywood royalty appears to be in no rush to be in a committed relationship to meet the criteria of a silly holiday. So crank up Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” today and remember you’re not the only one claiming single this year.
2. Potential Galentine’s Day
What’s a better day than a day with the girls (or boys)? Not having a bae for Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to pamper yourself with your closest friends, as you brag about how liberating it is to be single. After a day of massages, manicures, and margaritas, grab a movie ticket to “50 Shades Darker” with your other single besties as you celebrate your relationship freedom.
3. Saving Money
Saving money can never be a bad thing, and is luckily a large plus to spending the day solo. No more hassle with what gift to pick out, what restaurant to choose, or what outfit to wear. You can now spend the holiday buying none of it, or just buying it for yourself. After all, being single doesn’t mean you can’t have nice things too. Buy yourself the biggest bouquet of roses and decadent chocolates knowing that money spent treating yourself is money well spent.
4. Practicing Self-Empowerment
Spending this day without a companion provides the ultimate test of self-worth. While everyone else is occupied with creating the perfect day for their special someone, you have the opportunity to recognize that you are your own special someone. Being baeless on the 14th should be a celebration of your independence, rather than the mourning of your lack of cuddles. If you make it through the day of pink hearts and teddy bears, you should be proud of yourself.
5. Celebrating Other's That You Love
Valentine's Day doesn’t always have to be about your romantic companion. It can also be a celebration for everyone else in your life that you have love for. Being without a bae can open the door to send the “I love you” text you’ve been meaning to send to that grandparent, but you haven’t gotten the chance to get around to it. Remember, the 14th is a celebration of love— so celebrate everyone.
6. Understanding It's Just Another Day
As romantic as the holiday is portrayed to be in your favorite early 2000’s rom-com films, you should remember that Valentine's Day is just another day. While sure many would love to have their Chuck and Blair Central Park moment, you should recognize that their is potential for your sparked romance to come all the other 364 days of the year. But as for now, take the day with a grain of salt, because you never know when that special someone will walk in your life...maybe even in time for next Valentine’s.
