Karrueche Tran Files Restraining Order Against Chris Brown

Warning: This post contains subject matter regarding domestic abuse.

Karrueche Tran, Chris Brown’s ex-girlfriend, has filed a restraining order against the singer for several offenses including physical abuse and death threats. Tran says that several years ago Brown "punched me in my stomach twice," and "pushed me down the stairs,”  indicating that the physical abuse had been going on for some time. She also says that Brown told several people earlier this month that if he couldn’t have her then he would kill her, so she filed for a restraining order to prevent him from putting actions behind his words.

Singer Kay Cola took to Twitter to confirm Karrueche’s story. Cola lived underneath the couple when they were still dating and says that she used to hear Brown beating Tran and has had to call the police. When asked why she did not speak out before, Cola said that Tran had left Brown on her own and did not consider it her place to talk about it. She says that she did what she could in the situation, but now that Tran is speaking out about the abuse, she does not feel right letting people accuse the model of lying.

The domestic violence restraining order also requires Brown to stay 100 yards away from Tran’s mom and her brother, as Tran has said that her former boyfriend also threatened to harm her friends and has thrown a drink at them.

Brown has not spoken about the incident despite several organizations reaching out for comment, but it seems unlikely that these accusations are false. Back in 2009, Brown was found guilty abusing his girlfriend at the time, fellow singer Rihanna. She said Brown punched her and bit her repeatedly. He also choked her until she had trouble breathing.

The "Party" singer declared himself a guy who loves like “a stalker” in a snapchat rant he posted just four weeks ago. He claims that he would chase other men away and chase the woman he loves around because, if he can’t have you, no one can.

Despite confirmed cases of domestic violence, Brown continues to have a thriving career. Rather than hold him accountable for his actions, his most loyal fans are convinced he can do no wrong and continue to support him.

Cases like these speak to the large issue of the double standard that wealthy and talented men live by. They can physically and repeatedly abuse women without it destroying their careers. Men like Chris Brown, actor Casey Affleck and of course Donald Trump continue to work and gain the support of men and women alike, despite clear evidence of assaults they have committed. Meanwhile, their victims are often ridiculed or demonized for speaking out.

President Trump said that “when you’re a star, you can do anything,” but it doesn’t have to be this way. By holding abusers accountable and supporting victims, anyone can work towards getting rid of this power-driven double standard.
